You first reach Yumthang valley from Lachung, but suggest to go to Zero Point first. Zero point is located at altitude of 14500 ft and oxygen is less. It is a plateau covered with snow. Altitude related sickness can be caused hence precautions need to be taken. Smelling Karpur (used for aarti/prayer), Chewing Adrak helps. Local also sells Pop-corn to mitigate altitude related sickness
The mountains are magnificent. There are great sights with interspersing white and green all over. Some of the sights are right out of a picture book from the European Alps, if not better.
The place is also good for walking around. The roads are reasonably well maintained too thanks as always to the Indian Army.
On the way to returning from Gurudongmar lake visit Kalapathar via chopta valley. The only colors were black and white… the whole area were covered with snow and some black rocks broke the monotony of snow white.. The tempaarature of the place used to lie below zero and snow exists through out the year… this is not as high as Gurudongmar lake.. so less chance of breathing problems and high altitude sickness… that’s why children can enjoy in snow making snow idol etc… Every Gurudongmar traveller should go Kalapathar on the way back Lachen.
